On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) released the first list of nominees for the CAF Awards 2022.
Conferred by Africa’s premier football governing body, the CAF Awards is an awards evening held to honour the best African football players.
The last edition was held in 2019 in Hurghada, Egypt, with Senegalese forward Sadio Mane and Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala scooping the African Player of the Year in the Men and Women’s categories, respectively.
Here are 5 things you should know about this year’s edition of the prestigious awards.
1. The CAF Awards 2022 will hold on July 21, in Rabat, Morocco.
2. The nominees for the Men’s categories have been revealed. They include Player of the Year, Interclub Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year, National Team of the Year, and Club of the Year. While the sub-categories for the Women’s categories will be announced afterwards.
3. The nominations lists were compiled by a panel of stakeholders, which is comprised of technical experts, CAF legends, and Journalists, taking into account the nominees’ performance at all levels from September 2021 to June 2022.
4. The winners of each category will be determined by a voting panel comprised of CAF Technical Committee members, media professionals, Head Coaches and Captains of Member Associations, and clubs participating in the Interclub competitions at the group stage.
5. The awards will take place prior to final of Africa’s flagship women’s competition, the Total Energies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2022, which will take place between July 2 and July 23, 2022. The event will also coincide with the two-year anniversary of the launch of the CAF Women’s Football Strategy.
