Amid the backlashes that followed the pronouncement of Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), governors under the ruling party have submitted the names of five presidential hopefuls to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Daily Trust reported that the governors submitted the names in the early hours of Tuesday.
The names include the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo; former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ekiti State governor, Kayode Fayemi; his Ebonyi State counterpart, David Umahi and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi.
The president is expected to choose one of the five presidential aspirants as the APC consensus candidate.
BlackBox Nigeria had reported that the party’s National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, on Monday, told the National Working Committee (NWC) that Lawan is the preferred candidate of President Muhammadu Buhari — a pronouncement that has since sparked outrage in the ruling party.
Interestingly, Northern APC governors, some members of NWC and the presidency have faulted the claims.
Meanwhile, the special convention of the APC will hold today at Eagles Square in Abuja, as about 2,322 delegates from the 36 states and the FCT are expected to choose the party’s presidential flagbearer for the 2023 elections.
According to the official timetable for the convention, the event will kick off at 10am, while voting is expected to begin from 6pm.
