A former chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour has been elected as the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos.
He polled 111 votes to emerge as the winner of the LP substitution primaries held in Lagos, on Wednesday. While his closest challenger, a former chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Moshood Salvador secured 102 votes to place second.
Rhodes-Vivour, who was the senatorial candidate of the PDP for Lagos West in the 2019 elections, recently joined the LP after withdrawing from the race for the PDP governorship ticket in the state.
Meanwhile, crisis had rocked the Lagos LP over its gubernatorial flagbearer. It would be recalled that at its primary held months ago, one Ifagbemi Awamaridi had emerged as the guber candidate and was recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In an interesting twist of events, Salvador, a former Lagos PDP chairman, had also claimed he was the authentic governorship candidate of the party. This situation was said to have forced the leadership of the LP in Lagos to organise a substitution primary.
With the emergence of the 39-year-old Rhodes-Vivour who appears to enjoy the support of tech-savvy young Lagosians, the LP hopes to go head-to-head with the PDP candidate, Olajide Adediran (Jandor) and the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC at the polls.
