How 30 lawyers represented Kwara man charged to court for criticising Senate President, Bukola Saraki
For Biodun Baba, it was an unfortunate ordeal as he was dragged before a Kwara Magistrates court for allegedly insulting Senate President and former Kwara state Governor, Bukola Saraki. This was even after he has been sacked from his job at the LGEA Primary School in the Moro Local Government Area.
BlackBox Nigeria learnt that Biodun Baba had commented on a Facebook post announcing the discharge and acquittal of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal. His comment got him into trouble.
Biodun Baba had commented, “somebody believes that he is above everybody, he is not above the judgment of God. If Saraki has been discharged by the CCT, has he been discharged by God,” he asked rhetorically which got him into trouble with people he described as “sycophants”.
First, Biodun Baba who is also a member of the ruling All Progressive Congress was dragged before a disciplinary panel which found him guilty of insulting the Senate President.
Incidentally days later he shared another piece on Facebook with the title, “Presidency, Osinbajo replies Saraki on Magu issue”. This was the last straw that broke the camel’s back as he was expelled from the party but it didn’t end there.
Despite several pleadings from the 37-year-old and his aged parents, Biodun Baba was subsequently sacked from his job at the LGEA Primary School and dragged to court on trumped up charges. He was also accused of calling the Senate President a bastard on social media.
However luckily for him, he was able to get free representation from several lawyers numbering over 30 who sympathized with his ordeal and came to his aid. The lawyers were led by a Sambo Muritala who like his other colleagues worked pro bono for Baba after they were convinced that he had done nothing wrong by merely expressing himself.
The case was later withdrew by the prosecution team who couldn’t substantiate their claims.
While Biodun Baba stated categorically that Bukola Saraki was not involved in his ordeal, he has a message for the senate President…
The Senate President was careful in his statement denying any involvement or any link with my ordeal. He has only denied involvement; he has not done anything more than that. As the leader of the party in the state, I had expected him to chastise those who took me to court. He should have cautioned them and made some pronouncement that would show that he did not tolerate what they did. The sycophants have taken sycophancy in Kwara to the next level. This was a matter that should have only been addressed at the party level but when a member takes another member of the same party to court, will you say that party is united?
The Senate President will do members of the party in the state greater good by going a step further to caution those people who persecuted and prosecuted me in order to serve as a deterrent to others who would want to do the same thing in future.”
