President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed his position on the endorsement of political aspirants ahead of the next general elections in the country.
Buhari said the tradition of Abuja endorsing political aspirants will no longer be maintained. The president spoke after he revalidated his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in his constituency in Daura, Katsina state, on Saturday.
“No more crowning from Abuja downward. Let the people know this and appreciate it that they are in charge of their constituencies and they are in charge of the party. Without any incentive, they must come out and defend the party at any level so that we, you, and the party will feel secure and comfortable because the old-time of putting hands in the pocket is over because the money is no longer available,” he said.
According to the president, the APC’s style and structure should no longer be Abuja downwards, but from the ward level upwards.
In a brief statement via his official Twitter handle, Buhari also reiterated his position on the endorsement of political aspirants, adding that he appreciates his party — APC — for “choosing a bottom-up process of registration”.
“Today in Daura, I participated in the membership registration and revalidation exercise of our great party, @OfficialAPCNg.
“All good people must get involved in the task of nation-building and improving their society. Register for your party, and register to vote.
“I thank our Party for choosing a bottom-up process of registration.
“Our party style and structure should no longer be Abuja downwards, but from the ward level upwards. So that people can defend the party and its policies even at every level,” he tweeted.
