The Recording Academy, the organiser of the Grammy Awards ceremony, has announced the postponement of the 64th Grammy Awards due to the “uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant” of Covid-19.
Initially scheduled for January 31, the much-anticipated music awards gala will now hold at a rescheduled date which will be announced soon.
“After careful consideration and analysis with city and state officials, health and safety experts, the artist community and our many partners, we have postponed the 64th #GRAMMYs.
“We look forward to celebrating Music’s Biggest Night on a future date, which will be announced soon,” the Recording Academy said in a statement on Wednesday.
In an earlier joint statement, the Recording Academy and CBS stated that the health and safety of those in the music community remain their priority.
The organizers said, “The health and safety of those in our music community, the live audience, and the hundreds of people who work tirelessly to produce our show remains our top priority.
“Given the uncertainty surrounding the Omicron variant, holding the show on January 31 simply contains too many risks.”
The 2022 edition of the Grammy Awards, which is the second of the pandemic era, was expected to see a return to the usual arena-style celebration at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Leading the nominations is Jon Batiste, the jazz and R&B artist, who garnered 11.
