The race to occupy the vacant royal stool of ancient Oyo Kingdom appears to be getting more interesting, as no fewer than twenty princes have now shown interest in the traditional office.

According to The PUNCH, twenty-eight families from the Agunloye Ruling House have requested that the OyoMesi (King Makers) select the next Alaafin of Oyo from the princes in the ruling families.

It was gathered that twenty princes from the 28 ruling families have shown interest and even applied for the position of Alaafin of Oyo as the deadline set for submission of applications ends today, Friday, May 13.

Abdukareem Ishaq, who happens to be the Head of the Mogaji Isale Oja, on Thursday, revealed that Agunloye gave birth to 29 children and just one of the children’s family has produced the Alaafin three times, adding that the time has come for another family to produce the next Alaafin.

“It is our turn to produce the next Alaafin and we are calling on the Oyo Mesi to be fair in this case. Those on the other side have been saying it is their turn again and we find this disturbing,” he was quoted as saying.

The family head further stated that the families of the princes who have applied are deeply rooted in tradition and culture and are eligible to succeed Late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi who was produced by the Alowolodu Ruling House.

Recall that the monarch joined his ancestors on April 22 at the age of 83, having ruling the ancient town for 52 years. Following his demise, the Alaafin of Oyo stool has since become vacant.
