The producers of the movie “Gangs of Lagos” and Amazon Prime Video have apologized to the Isale Eko people for desecrating an aspect of Lagos culture.
The apology comes after a lawsuit was filed by the Isale Eko Descendants Union, alleging that the movie wrongly depicted the Eyo Masquerade as a gang of murderers and Isale Eko as a den of criminals.
The lawsuit, which was filed at the Lagos High Court, claimed that the movie’s portrayal of the Eyo Masquerade was sacrilegious and scandalous.
The court granted the union’s request for a judicial review, leading to a settlement between the parties.
According to the terms of settlement, the producers and Amazon Prime agreed to tender an unreserved apology to the Isale Eko Descendants Union.
Amazon will also issue a letter recognizing the union’s position that the movie erroneously portrayed the cultural heritage of the Eyo Masquerade and the Isale-Eko people.
The Chairman of the Isale-Eko Descendants Union, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem SAN, confirmed the apology, stating that the union feels vindicated by the judgment.
The apology is seen as a victory for the Isale Eko people and a recognition of the importance of respecting cultural heritage.
