Nigerians are anticipating over a potential national honour for the country’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their historic fifth consecutive FIBA AfroBasket championship title.

The expectation is based on the precedent set when the Super Falcons received $100,000 each and were conferred with national honours after their 2023 World Cup outing, which has raised hopes that D’Tigress might receive similar recognition.

The Rena Wakama led team secured their seventh African championship with a thrilling 78-64 victory over Mali at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, on Saturday, July 27, 2025.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in an official statement from the State House on Monday, August 4, praised the team for their resilience, teamwork, and determination, highlighting their role in uplifting the nation’s spirit, “you have written your names in history and shown the world what to expect out of Africa,” he remarked.

The President’s warm words and eagerness to receive D’Tigress and the AfroBasket trophy at the Aso Villa have sparked expectations of a possible national honour.

While no official announcement has been made, the tone of the presidential message hints strongly at a potential national honour.

As Nigeria awaits the team’s arrival, the question remains, Are D’Tigress scheduled for national honour?
