ASUU: Olulade Appeals for Calm, Understanding

The member representing Epe Constituency II in the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Olusegun Olulade has appealed to members of the Academic of Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to show understanding with the Federal Government and return back to work.

Olulade, who stated this on Thursday, commended the Federal Government for admitting that it failed to meet its part of the agreement reached with ASUU last year.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, had on Wednesday admitted that the Federal Government failed to meet its part of an agreement reached with ASUU in 2016, which led to the ongoing industrial action by the union.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman, Committee on Health Services of the House, said that for the federal government to have admitted fault, is a pointer to the fact that the government has the interest of the union at heart.

While urging the union to suspend its ongoing strike in the universities in the interest of the nation, Olulade stated that its services are not only to the government but majorly to students as well.

He said: “Many of us who are in high places today including those in government would nõt have been here if not for the effort of these ASUU members. We passed through their tutelage and that is why we are here today.

“So their roles and importance cannot be overemphasized, however, they need to consider the students because if they keep sitting at home, it will be easier for them to get engage in various social vices.

“I am using this medium to appeal to ASUU to consider some students who are currently writing degree and promotion examinations and call off the strike and return to the negotiation table.”

He also urged the federal government to as a matter of urgency begin the process that will lead to the fulfillment of the agreement reached with ASUU last year with a view to ending industrial action by a union that is as important as ASUU.
