Applauds As Organizing Committee Unveils Logo For 2019 Oba Kabir Shotobi Independence Day Mini Marathon Sponsored By Hon. SOB Agunbiade

APPLAUDS AS ORGANIZING COMMITTEE UNVEILS LOGO FOR 2019 OBA KABIR SHOTOBI INDEPENDENCE DAY MINI MARATHON SPONSORED BY HON. SOB AGUNBIADE

After four years down the line, all is set for another glamorous edition of the Oba Kabir Shotobi Independence Day Mini Marathon Competition as the organizing committee of the independence day’s event earlier in the day unveiled the logo for this year’s edition tagged #MarathonOfGrace.

 

This time around, the competition initiated in 2015 by the lawmaker representing Ikorodu Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon S.O.B Agunbiade is slated to cut across the division in 10 Kilometers come October 1st 2019.

 

In his brief address during the press conference held at the Ayanburen’s palace, the brain behind the event and majority leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly, expresses optimism that this year’s edition will surpass the records set by previous editions especially with the support of the newly appointed Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Gafaar Toyin Bolowotan.

 

He also applauded the Director General who is a son of the soil for his willingness to implement the Marathon event across other divisions within the state.

 

In his response, Gafaar Toyin Bolowotan assured the organizers that the government will do all in its power to make sure that the yearly event is here to stay.

 

“The commission within its capacity, will uphold the sponsors of this programme as it is our own and we will make sure that this year’s edition is successful and next year is better, He assured.

Oba Shotobi Independence Day Mini MArathon

While taking an inventory of the journey so far, the chairman Organizing Committee for the independence day marathon race, Mr Bello Akeem, attributed the staying power of the yearly event to the moral and financial support of the Majority Leader, Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade.

 

According to him, the event was conceptualized by the lawmaker to attain the purposes of promoting sport in the state, create healthy sporting rivalry amongst all public and registered private secondary schools in Ikorodu Division of the state which comprises of Ikorodu Constituency 1 and 2, domicile Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration in Ikorodu, empower the youth in long distance races, immortalize the name of Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi and to reduce the menace in the division by engaging the youth in sporting activities.

 

Akeem also noted that the competition has gradually attained a unifying position in the community as members of the division look forward to witness promising athletes within the division ranging from ages eleven and sixteen have their fair share in the athletic hall of fame.

 

“The journey started on the 22nd of September 2015, when Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade initiated the Independence Day Mini Marathon and was flagged off by the Monarch himself – Oba Kabir Adewale Shotobi on the 1st of October, 2015.

 

“The Independence Day Marathon is a competition that the people of Ikorodu Division look forward to as we have recorded notable progress in the participation of athletes between the ages of eleven (11) and sixteen (16) years, drawn from both public and registered private schools in the Division.

 

“The competition started in 2015 with ninety-two (92) participants, among which Shakiru Sodiq from Oriwu Senior Model College came first in the male category and Olayinka Boluwatife of Shams-El-Deen Senior Grammar School came first in the female category. Boluwatife took part in the Lagos state Ibile Games and won Bronze Medal in the competition.

 

“In 2018, four hundred and nine (409) students registered for screening and Peter John of His Touch School Ikorodu and Affigbo Esther of Luwasa Senior High School Ijede came first respectively in both categories. Affigbo Esther then went on to win Bronze medal in 2018 Lagos Access City Marathon. Other names of past winners are printed on this year’s logo to encourage other athletes,” Akeem revealed.

According to the organizers, the route for this year 10KM competition is as follows;

 

From Ayangbure Palace – Etunrenren Street – Zenith Bank Road – Lowa Estate – Jumofak – Lagos Road – Ikorodu Roundabout – Sabo Roundabout – Kokoro Abu – Awolowo Road – Ota Ona – Obun Ale – Ita Elewa – Irese Road – Sheriff Junction – Igbogbo Road – The finish point is Police Barracks Playing Ground.

 

The event slated to hold 1st of October 2019 is scheduled to go as follow;

 

Collection of Forms: 9th – 18th of September 2019 at Hon. S.O.B’s Constituency office (34, Awolowo Road Oke Ota-Ona Ikorodu. From 9:00am to 5:00pm daily.

Medical fitness screening for all participants: 18th – 25t of September 2019 at Hon. S.O.B’s Office (34 Awolowo Road Oke Ota Ona Ikorodu, from 10:00am to 4:00pm daily

Release and Pasting of Medically Examined & Fit Participants: September 27th, 2019 at Hon. S.O.B’s Constituency Office.

The Unveiling of the route by past winners: September 28th 2019 at the Palace by 2:00pm
The Marathon and Presentation of Gifts to the Winners: October 1st at 7:00am form The Palace of Ayangbure to The Police Barrack Playing Ground at Igbogbo Road.

 

The committee further revealed that it is working with relevant government agencies for approval and collaboration on security, medical and technical officials for the competition.

 

BlackBox Nigeria also gathered that there will be trophies to be won by schools, medals and cash prizes to be won by athletes with consolation prizes for forty (40) athletes and certificate of participation for all athletes who take part in the competition.

 

In his final remarks, the chairman extended his heartfelt gratitude to government and corporate bodies who have made the event a success over the years.

“Once again, we use this medium to appreciate Education District II, the Nigerian Police, LASTMA, LSNC, the General Hospital Ikorodu, LASAMBUS, Gentle men of the press, Ikorodu Local Government, LCDAs in the Division and more importantly, Lagos State Sports Commission and its staff and other private individuals who has been supporting the competition since 2015. God will continue to bless you all.”
