Inconclusive Doctors: Two Chairman Emerges For Lagos NMA After Elections

By  |

The crisis in the Lagos state chapter of the Nigeria Medical Association is far from over, as two different chairmen have been sworn in at different locations in the state.

Health experts and groups are worried that the development will have negative effects on health care delivery.

The internal wrangling started about two weeks ago when some  doctors under the aegis of the Medical Guild, – a body affiliated to the NMA held an election in the premises of the Nigeria institute of medical research, abandoning the election earlier held by the incumbent NMA chairman, Doctor Tope Ojo,at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

The break-away fraction led by Doctor Olumuyiwa Odusote accused the Ojo group of irregularities in the election.

They claimed the only way to address such shortcoming was  to conduct a transparent election as advised by the national body.

During the swearing in ceremony for the new chairman, Doctor Olubunmi Omojowolo of the
Ojo-led group said members of the Odusote faction were not qualified to take part in the election after falling to pay their annual dues, up to date.

They  accused the Odusote fraction of causing confusion within the  ranks of Lagos NMA .

Former president of the association, doctor George Okara, has called on the Odusote group to join hands with the new chairman to move the association forward,  pointing out that a house divided against itself cannot stand.
